Are Malaysians qualified to judge at international film festivals?

Originally uploaded by yasmin the storyteller
Four Malaysians have been entrusted with jury duties at three festivals around the world. Alhamdulillah.

This would be the third time judging for me, after the Fajr International Film Festival (Iran) and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Greece). And last year, Amir judged at the Osian Cinefan Film Festival in India.

In any case, the list of Malaysians, and the international festivals in which they're judging in 2008, is as follows:

Ho Yuhang -- 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam

Wong Tuck Cheong -- 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam

Amir Muhammad -- Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, France

Yasmin Ahmad -- 58th Berlin International Film Festival (International Jury, Generations category)

Strangely, I think I learn more about filmmaking from judging than participating at international festivals. Being surrounded by filmmakers who are infinitely more accomplished than yourself is such an enriching experience.

And you know what else? I wager none of the names above will ever be picked to judge at Festival Filem Malaysia!
