"Muallaf". Water, water everywhere!

I love my crew.

Whenever it starts to rain, no matter how important it is for the scene to be bright and sunny, we take a break.

No one complains, no one curses. Everyone looks to the sky, smiles, and whispers, "Praise the Lord." (Alhamdulillah.)

Ipoh was extraordinarily wet during the making of "Muallaf", and yet we completed our shoot three days ahead of schedule, using up only 90 cans of film when we had anticipated 110.

Oh, the magic that is contained within that simple phrase "Alhamdulillah".

As always, everytime it starts to rain, some bystanders will ask, "Does this upset your schedule?"

To which we usually reply, "Perhaps. But in life, rain is more important than film!"

And that never fails to bring a smile to their faces as well as ours.

They're paying for our flight and accommodation.

They've organised a special tribute to our body of work on the 7th of July, and I've been chosen as a guest of honour, alongside Christopher Doyle and Robin Wright Penn. (Do you think they've got me confused with some Iranian director? Hehe! Arabic name, mah?)

Best of all, "Mukhsin" has been selected, from hundreds of films around the world, to be one of only 14 in competition. They're also screening "Sepet" and "Gubra".

Alhamdulillah. Rabbana wa lakalhamdu.

The sad news is, only Sharifah Amani and I can go. Leya will be working, and Yana's got exams.

We expect to leave for Paris sometime on the 5th of July, inshaallah, and we plan to fly back on the 8th.

As always, I'm not expecting to win. I'm just grateful we're getting an all-paid-for trip to, and tribute in, Paris! Tres, tres jolie!

The Swan in "Muallaf".

Her name is Rohani. She is 21.

The only friend she has in the whole wide world is Rohana, her 14 year old sister.

They escape their abusive father -- Rohani's shaved head was forced upon her -- and meet with 28-year old Brian Goh.

Brian himself was severely punished as a child for exploring his own body in ways which are taboo to the Catholic faith.

Together the girls and Brian learn to confront old ghosts and lay them to rest.

This is "Muallaf". A story of old hurts, new friendships, and the painful yet beautiful journey to forgiveness.
